  1. Supercommittee vote due by Nov. 23

The 12-member panel of representatives from the House and Senate is due to vote on recommendations for $1.2 trillion in spending cuts by the Nov. 23 deadline, setting up a vote on the resulting bill in Congress by Dec. 23. A bipartisan letter with more than 100 congressional signatories, supported by the AADA, was sent to the supercommittee recommending a permanent physician payment fix.   1. JAAD study finds melanoma reporting lacking

A study published in a supplement to the November 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found a sizable number of dermatologists were unaware that they were required to report new melanoma diagnoses to their state’s registry. Government, legislative and regulatory affairs

  1. CMS releases ACO rules

    The final rules for accountable care organizations were released by CMS on Oct. 20, laying the groundwork for payments based on improved coordination of care for Medicare patients. Read the AADA’s summary of the impact the rules are likely to have.

  2. Fee schedule shows 27.4 percent cut
  3. CMS released updated payment rates for physician services on Nov. 1, including an across-the-board 27.4 percent reduction based on the current SGR formula. The Conversion Factor will be reduced from $33.9764 to $24.6712 unless Congress steps in by Jan. 1. For analysis and updates, visit the Academy’s website.

  4. Appropriate use criteria for Mohs under development
  5. A task force with representatives from several dermatology societies is currently developing appropriate use criteria for Mohs micrographic surgery. Learn more about the reasons behind their development and the process the task force is following in the new appropriate use criteria section of AAD.org, which includes a Dermatology World article on the development of the Mohs criteria.

The Derm Exam Prep Course is being held Nov. 18-20 at the Omni Orlando Resort at Champions Gate in Orlando, Fla. On-site registration is required at a member rate of $850. Learn more about the course.

    Nominations for the AAD Master Dermatologist award must be submitted by Dec. 9. Learn more about the award and the nominating criteria.

  1. Academy seeks statements on proposed bylaws amendment

The proposed adjunct membership amendment will be presented to the membership for a vote on the spring 2012 election ballot. The ballot will be accompanied by statements from members who express support for or opposition to the proposed amendment. Statements are due Dec. 1.

  1. Apply by Dec. 9 for the Humanism in Medicine award
