December 2012

Looking forward to 2013

As 2012 comes to an end, AAD invites you to celebrate the growth and impact of the Academy’s humanitarian programs thanks to the generosity of members, individuals and corporate partners. Through the philanthropic gifts made by the Academy’s generous friends, thousands of youth and adults have benefited from skin cancer screenings, shade structure grants, sun safety education, and Camp Discovery. In 2013 the Academy celebrates its 75th anniversary and will continue to serve our members and, through them, local communities. Have you made your gift in support of the Academy’s life-changing programs?

Give a gift in honor or in memory of a family member, friend, or colleague like Clay J. Cockerell, MD, FAAD does (see Gift of giving) and make that person feel special. AAD members can also make a donation with their membership renewals or when registering for the 2013 Annual Meeting. Corporate supporters can learn more about partnering with the Academy in the 2013 Partnering Booklet (see Opportunities).

As the new year begins, your support will help ensure it is a resounding success. Together we are making a difference and promoting healthy skin and healthy lives.

Givers' guide tip:
Did you know your charitable gift is tax-deductible in accordance with IRS regulations? Make your year-end gift by December 31, 2012 and have a happy new year come tax season!

Giving back

Come to the 2013 Annual Meeting a day early and you can participate in Dermatology in Action! Dermatology in Action projects give Annual Meeting attendees the opportunity to give back to the host city and show the Academy cares about making a difference in communities.

Changes ahead for corporate publications

The Academy strives to meet the needs of our partners and as an ever evolving institution, the AAD seeks to create efficiency and reduce waste. As such, in the year ahead, we will be making some changes, including having a smaller printing of the 2013 Partnering Opportunities Booklet. The booklet will be more widely available online as a PDF and Flash document. See the 2013 booklet here.

Gift of giving

At this time of year, it is a constant challenge to show the people in your life that you appreciate their support, friendship, and camaraderie. The Academy can help! Show your friends, family and colleagues they are special to you while also supporting life-changing Academy programs. When you make a Tribute gift in honor or in memory of someone special, your donation in support of the Academy’s humanitarian programs takes on added significance.

“Tribute gifts are a wonderful way to support AAD programs throughout the year,” says Clay J. Cockerell, MD, FAAD, who makes regular tribute gifts to let others know he is thinking about them. Learn why Dr. Cockerell finds Tribute gifts meaningful.

Giving back: One Amgen employee's cycling adventure

From time to time, we share stories about some of the very special people who work at our partner corporations. We find that not only do our corporate supporters provide financial support benefiting the Academy, the specialty, and, ultimately, excellence in patient care, but they also offer opportunities for their employees to do the same. The Academy’s partner corporations are filled with employees who make a personal commitment to volunteer and give back to communities where they can make a difference.

Amgen is one of those companies. It has been a steadfast and generous supporter of the Academy for as long as the Academy has recorded corporate giving. And Chris Lindsay, PharmD, is one of those very special people working at Amgen, and giving of her time to help in the fight against arthritis. Read on and learn how Chris and Amgen are making a difference.
