March 2011

A busy start to the New Year!

I am happy to report last month’s Annual Meeting was a rousing success! I hope you attended and were able to experience first-hand the educational sessions, exhibits, and other opportunities available. I am especially pleased with the achievements of our new Dermatology in Action initiative. Thanks to contributions in the form of volunteer service, financial support, and medical supply donations, we were able to provide significant assistance to the New Orleans community. Thank you especially to my fellow Dermatology in Action volunteers, more than 80 strong, who worked one afternoon to help to rebuild a community center destroyed during Hurricane Katrina more than five years ago. Take a few minutes to watch Skin & Allergy News’ video of AAD volunteers sharing their volunteering experience.

You may also have spotted many of our members wearing gold Star Pins at the Annual Meeting. Through the Star Pin project members recognized those of us who have served as their mentors with a small donation to the Sustaining Fund in support of the Leadership Institute. More than 150 mentors were recognized.

Thank you for helping the Academy to leave a lasting impression on New Orleans and celebrate leadership.

Sincerely,

William D. James, MD, FAAD
Immediate Past President

Make a difference in the life of a child!

You can help change the lives of children with chronic skin conditions by making a contribution to the AAD Camp Discovery Endowment. “Having the opportunity to attend camp as a child showed me that I wasn’t alone,” says Lindsey Johnson, who attended camp for 5 years then returned as a camp volunteer. Read Lindsey’s story of her Camp Discovery experiences.

We are most grateful to our corporate partners who supported the Academy’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans. They helped to make our 69th Annual Meeting a tremendous success. Thank you! The Summer Academy Meeting in New York, August 3-7, 2011, is just around the corner, and there are still some exciting support opportunities available. Find out more.

You may have worn, or seen other members wearing, our redesigned Sustaining Fund lapel pins and ribbons in New Orleans. These pins and ribbons identify the wearer as a Sustaining Fund donor and a philanthropic leader. Donors who have made contributions each year for five or more consecutive years have a special “5+ years” bar on the bottom of their pins. Additional recognition is provided based on cumulative annual giving levels.

I wear my Sustaining Fund lapel pin year-round to show how proud I am to support our Academy’s many truly outstanding programs. I hope you too will wear your pin with pride. Thank you all for your continuing support!

The Academy had the opportunity to personally thank its corporate partners at the recent Annual Meeting. We are grateful for the support our corporate partners have provided, which will help to ensure that the Academy continues to have the resources it needs to pursue its mission. In addition, the Academy gratefully acknowledges the following corporate partners for providing in-kind contributions of product and medical supplies in support of the 2011 Annual Meeting Live Patient Demonstrations: Allergan, Inc., Central Avenue Pharmacy, Custom Scripts Pharmacy, Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation, Mentor Corporation, Merz Aesthetics, MidMark Corporation and SonoSite, Inc.
